Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds a second layer of security to your Garde login. On top of your password, you’ll enter a 6-digit code each time you sign in. This article walks you through setting it up.
Why does this matter? Garde holds your restaurant’s financial data — invoices, costs, sales, labor info. MFA makes it dramatically harder for someone to break into your account, even if they get your password. It’s required for anyone with access to Labor data or other sensitive information.
Even without MFA turned on full-time, Garde may occasionally ask for a code if you log in from a new device, browser, or location. When that happens, a code gets emailed to you.

MFA Through the Mobile App

Setting Up MFA

You can enable MFA from your profile settings. Here’s how:

1) Click your name in the upper-right corner and choose “Settings.”

2) Go to the Security tab and click Enable next to Multi-Factor Authentication.

3) You’ll be asked to log out to finish setup. Click “Log out now” to continue, or “Finish later” — in that case, you’ll be prompted to complete setup at your next login.

4) Log back in with your password. You’ll then pick your MFA method.

Choosing Your MFA Method

Two options for receiving your 6-digit code:
  1. SMS text message (recommended) — No extra apps needed. Just your phone number.
  2. Authenticator app — An app like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator generates a fresh code every 30 seconds.
Will Garde use my phone number for marketing? Nope. The number is only used to send you the 6-digit code. That’s it. How does an authenticator app work? You install one app (Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator are the most popular) and scan a QR code. From then on, the app generates a new code every 30 seconds. Handy if you already use one for other logins.

1) Select “SMS” and enter your mobile number.

2) Enter the code from your text message and click Continue.

If the code doesn’t arrive or expires, click Resend to get a new one.

Option 2: Authenticator App

1) Download an authenticator app on your phone. We recommend Google Authenticator if you don’t have one already.

2) Open the app, tap the + icon, and scan the QR code shown on screen.

3) The app will add “Garde” with your username. Enter the 6-digit code it shows into the login screen and click Continue.

Save Your Recovery Code

After setup, you’ll see a long recovery code on screen. Copy it and store it somewhere safe — you’ll need it if you lose your phone or get locked out. Writing it down and keeping it in a secure spot (like a locked desk drawer) works great. Click I have safely recorded this code and then Continue. You’re all set.

Extra Tips

Remember This Device

When you’re logging in from a trusted location (not public Wi-Fi, not a shared computer), check the box to Remember this device for 30 days. This saves you from entering the code every single time.

Garde Password Requirements

  • At least 8 characters
  • Must include lowercase, uppercase, a number, and a special character (!@#$%^&*)
  • Can’t reuse any of your last 5 passwords
  • Can’t include personal data (your name, phone number, etc.)
  • Can’t include common phrases (like the word “password”)

What If I Lose My Phone or Get Locked Out?

Your Recovery Code is your backup plan. When prompted for the 6-digit code, click Try another method and enter your recovery code instead. Once you’re back in, follow the steps above to set up MFA again with a new phone number or app. Lost your recovery code too? Email contact@garde.app for help.
