Sometimes the default units don’t match how you actually count things. Maybe you buy sirloin steaks individually but your vendor prices them by the ounce. Or you get sheet pans of pre-portioned desserts and want to count by the pan instead of each piece. Custom count-by units let you bridge that gap so inventory counts stay fast and accurate. Here’s a common example: you buy “Beef, Sirloin 12 oz” steaks. Your team counts them one at a time on the shelf, but the vendor sells by the ounce. You’d create a custom count-by unit called “Each” that equals 12 ounces — so when someone counts 5 steaks, Garde knows that’s 60 oz.

1. Go to the Products menu

Navigate to Products > View All Products in the left sidebar.

2. Click on Products

3. Select the product you want to edit

4. Click “Edit Product”

5. Click “Edit Unit and Name”

6. Type your custom alias in the count-by alias box

For this example, type “Each” — but you can name it whatever makes sense for your team (e.g., “Pan”, “Rack”, “Sleeve”).

7. Enter the count-by value

This tells Garde what one of your custom units actually represents. In our example, 1 “Each” of “Beef, Sirloin 12 oz” equals 12 ounces.

8. Click Save

9. Check the vendor item conversion

Garde may auto-calculate the conversion from the vendor item. If it doesn’t — or you need to adjust it — add or edit the vendor item to product conversion here.

10. Click “Save” one more time

If you’re not sure what value to enter, check your vendor invoice. The unit and quantity on the invoice should tell you exactly how the vendor measures the item, which makes it easy to set up the right conversion.
